The SUNY Geneseo cross country team has been an intercollegiate sport since the 1967. Head coach Mike Woods is a 1969 graduate of Geneseo and is in his 17th season. The men's program was started by coach Dunc Hinckley and in 1980, the women's program was started under the direction of coach Rich Ceronie.

The women’s cross country team highlighted their 2008 season with an 11th place finish in their 10th straight and 14th overall appearance at the NCAA Division III meet. The Knights were the dominant team in the region, winning the NCAA Atlantic Regional, and their ninth straight SUNYAC crown. Senior Laura Iafrati and first year Alyssa Smith paced the Knights as Iafrati was 46th at the NCAA and second at the SUNYAC, while Smith finished 47th at the nationals and third at the SUNYAC, with each runner earning first team All-SUNYAC and All-Atlantic Region honors. Juniors Danni Hunt and Erin Marks garnered first team All-SUNYAC and All-Region recognition, while seniors Lisa Halloran and Mary McGrath posted second team All-SUNYAC and All-Region performances. First year Sam Legere joined the group at the Atlantic Regional and NCAA Division III championships. Hunt and Smith were new inductees to the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame, while head coach Mike Woods was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the eighth time.

On the men's side, Geneseo highlighted their 2008 season by finishing eighth at the NCAA Division III championships, the second-best national finish in program history. On the way to their fifth straight appearance at the nationals, Geneseo placed third at the NCAA Atlantic Regional and placed second in the SUNYAC championships. Junior Tim Chichester paced Geneseo and was named first team All-SUNYAC and All-Atlantic Region. Senior Brett Dolan and sophomore Tom Reubens earned second team All-SUNYAC and All-Region recognition, with Dolan being a new inductee to the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. Junior Jesse Berube, sophomore Mark Streb and first year Lee Berube earned All-Region recognition, while juniors Bobby Henchen and Bill Juda joined the group as participants at the NCAA championships.
